YEAR 2000 TOUR OF WEST COAST OF SCOTLAND & ISLE OF SKYE

My tour of Scotland started early this year, on the 5th. April, my first port of call was ARROCHAR situated at the top end of LOCH LONG which runs parallel to the famous LOCH LOMOND 35 miles north from the city of GLASGOW. in the 12 days I was there in my motor home- RV. the night time tempature was -0 or 0 degrees Celsius and day time 5 to 8 degrees Celsius , lucky for me , the weather stayed dry and gave me the opportunity to go hill walking and to see after 20 years of visiting Scotland a RED SQUIRREL for the first time also the Seals which visit Loch Long and stay most of the year were here again.

On the 10th April I drove 50 miles to ARDRISHAIG on LOCH FYNE were the Loch Fyne entrance for the CRINAN CANAL is located, there is a lighthouse at Ardrishaig but I was unable to get close enough to it, to operate fairly as a portable station and so I drove along the road that runs part of the way along side the Crinan Canal to CRINAN LIGHTHOUSE at the ATLANTIC end of the canal and as can be seen for the photographs there is a small Lighthouse about 21 feet/7 metres high. I asked people working on the canal for information about the Lighthouse but nobody could help me, if anyone reading this has any information, I would be very pleased to have it. If you are looking on your own map for the Lighthouse , find Isle of JURA on the west coast of Scotland and then see the the map below.

The Crinan Canal starts from ARDRISHAIG on Loch Fyne and after 9 miles it flows into the Sound of Jura at CRINAN, the canal was constructed 1793 to1801, it's purpose was to enable ships to reach the Atlantic Ocean from Loch Fyne, without having to make the long and often stormy passage of the KINTYRE peninsula away to the south. Unfortunatly by the time the Canal was finished new transatlantic vessels being built were to wide to use the Canal, now it is mainly used by small coasters, fishing boats and yachts, Queen Victoria traversed the canal by barge in1847.

Not the best of days for taking photographs. I was not able to give any early warning that I was going to operate from Crinan Lighthouse as this was only an exploratory trip, I was able to make about 30 contacts on 40M & 20M.and my thanks to Ziggy DL1AZZ for putting me up on the DX-cluster. Information on my motor home, RV /P station Yaesu FT 707 . 80W and PRO-AM mobile antenna.

In 3 or 4 days I will put up another page with photographs of my visit to NEIST POINT Lighthouse on the Isle of Skye.it will be posted at Listbot.com

I made 3 later visits this year to Crinan lighthouse and made many contacts except on my last visit on 1/9/00 WX was very good that day but no propagation on HF bands, I made 4 contacts on 40 M and after 4 hours of calling CQ 20M/15M and not geting one reply I returned to Arrochar.

Best wishes to all Amateur Radio Lighthouse hunters and those who just love them.
