The MM0BNN/P visit to Sgeir Bhuidhe Lighthouse 12 /08/01 ARLHS # SCO 206

This is the latest information I have about Sgeir Bhuidhe lighthouse near Port Appin, as can be seen from the newspaper report above the lighthouse was painted pink with blue spots as a protest by the local residents because the Northern lighthouse Board was going to replace the lighthouse with a modern metal structure with a light on top, I believe the lighthouse has been in place for 98 years and is part of the local scene and is also visited by tourists from many parts of the world who come to Scotland. It was then repainted back to it's original colour white and in turn it was then painted yellow by some of the local people, this then brought the two sides together and a compromised has been reached with the Lighthouse board and the Port Appin parish council in that the parish council will buy the lower part of the lighthouse ( they are fund raising for this ) without the lamp room as this was to costly, it will be then resited in Port Appin but out of site of the sea also the Northern lighthouse Board have agreed the the replacement lighthouse will look similar to the original one. If you think that the name Port Appin or Appin is familiar think back to when you read "Kidnapped" by R.L.Stevenson.

LATEST INFORMATION 2005 SGIER BHUIDHE (YELLOW SKERRY)

On my latest visit to Port Appin 27/08/05, I found that in 2002 the original acetylene powered light was replaced with a modern automated solar-powered light and the museum of scottish lighthouses loaned the old lantern top section to the village of Port Appin for its safe preservation and is now to be found positioned outside the village hall., its on the right as you drive into Port Appin. All above photographs taken 2005.

The new Amateur Radio Light House Society listing for the light is ARLHS # SCO-360. For information about lighthouse listing and more please visit www.arlhs.com
