The CORPACH lighthouse is located at the entrance to the CALEDONIAN CANAL , 3 miles from the highland town of FORT WILLIAM in Scotland, power boats and sailing yachts travel from Corpach on LOCH LINNHE on the west coast of Scotland through the GREAT GLEN, LOCH NESS to INVERNESS on the east coast of Scotland.
The canal: 60 miles total length, 22 miles of canal cuttings, 106 feet summit at Loch Oich, 29 locks, maximum craft dimensions: 150 feet long, 35 feet beam, 13feet 6 inch draught . The canal was completed in 1822, it is twinned with the Canadian RIDEAU canal..
The "JACOBITE" steam train runs from Fort William and passed the Corpach lighthouse on it's way to the small fishing port of Mallaig a distance of about 40 miles/60 Kms, it passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the highlands of Scotland. There are 2 locomotives used in the 2004 season, they are LNER class B1 # 61264 and K1 # 62005. To see a steam train running again was a great thrill for me as I was in 1951 until 1962 a locomotive fireman and had worked on both classes of locomotive. Also this railway was used in some " Harry Potter" films.
The most recent films have used part of the route on which the Jacobite runs. The scene of "Hogwarts Express" travelling across a viaduct was filmed on the Glenfinnan Viaduct, some 16 miles west of Fort William.
